Vietnam's Surgery Sector Catches Up with Regional and Global Medical Centers

Vietnam's surgical sector, particularly in minimally invasive surgery, has now reached a level comparable to leading medical centers in the region and worldwide. Many complex surgeries that previously required open incisions are now performed using minimally invasive techniques, such as heart valve replacement and repair.

Professor Tran Binh Giang, President of the Vietnam Association of Surgery and Endoscopic Surgery, emphasized this point at the 2024 National Congress of Surgery and Endoscopy, themed "Sharing Knowledge - Shaping the Future," held in Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam's surgical sector has been consistently developing. Vietnamese surgeons are constantly seeking and learning new techniques to make surgeries more effective and less invasive. Many techniques, from simple to complex, from general surgery to specialized techniques, have driven the development of the surgical sector, gradually approaching the level of advanced medicine worldwide.

The development of minimally invasive surgery is evidence of Vietnam's rapid adoption and integration with high-tech medicine globally, positioning the country among those with a thriving minimally invasive surgery sector.

Minimally invasive surgery not only treats diseases but also minimizes adverse effects on patients, reducing pain, promoting faster recovery, and offering better aesthetics.

Cranial endoscopy and endoscopic skull base surgery via the nose to treat brain tumors have been performed at many centers. Liver and kidney transplantation from living donors to patients, a complex procedure requiring high levels of expertise and advanced equipment, has also been successfully performed by Vietnamese doctors.

In 2003, Vietnam's first Minimally Invasive Surgery Training Center was established at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, laying the foundation for the development of minimally invasive surgery in the country. To date, the center has trained thousands of doctors in minimally invasive surgery, with over 800 doctors from 11 countries participating.

Viet Duc Hospital is one of the first centers in Vietnam to perform organ transplantation. Currently, the hospital leads the country in kidney, heart, lung, and liver transplantation from brain-dead donors.

In the South, Cho Ray Hospital has achieved impressive results in organ transplantation, with 1,226 successful kidney transplants, 30 liver transplants, and 7 heart transplants, contributing to improving the quality of life for thousands of patients.

Professor Tran Binh Giang believes that with the established foundation, Vietnam's surgical sector will continue to have the potential to develop and reach higher standards of safety and effectiveness.
