Opportunities for Vietnam’s Healthcare Sector Amid Growth, Innovation and Transformation

ASEAN’s Healthcare Ecosystem Enters a New Cycle of Growth and Transformation

Healthcare industry across ASEAN is undergoing changes in both demand and supply capacity. According to Invest ASEAN, healthcare expenditure in the region is currently equivalent to approximately 4% of GDP, significantly below the global average of around 10%. This gap indicates that ASEAN’s healthcare systems still have room to expand investment, improve service quality and strengthen healthcare capacity.

In 2025, ASEAN attracted US$243.9 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI), an increase of 9.7% compared with 2024, reaffirming the region’s appeal to international capital. In healthcare, Medical Devices has been identified as one of the target sectors under the ASEAN Regional Investment Promotion Action Plan (RIPAP) 2025–2030, indicating the sector’s potential to attract investment and develop regional value chains.

In addition, ASEAN’s population is projected to exceed 700 million. A growing middle class, increasing life expectancy and rising healthcare needs are providing further momentum for the market. Demand is also shifting from disease treatment towards prevention, proactive care and improved quality of life, creating opportunities across pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics and emerging healthcare solutions.

Against this backdrop of growing demand, investment in ASEAN healthcare is increasingly expanding into healthcare services, medical devices and medical technology, alongside traditional areas such as pharmaceuticals. Digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI) and new care models are also moving the sector towards a phase of development with greater emphasis on efficiency, quality and accessibility, creating further opportunities for businesses, investors and healthcare organisations to participate more deeply in the ASEAN market.

Emerging Trends Shaping the Future of Healthcare

The healthcare sector across ASEAN is undergoing significant transformation, driven by demographic changes, evolving healthcare needs and technological advancements. Population ageing is emerging as one of the trends with far-reaching implications for healthcare demand and service delivery models. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the proportion of people aged 60 and above in ASEAN is projected to increase from 12.2% of the population in 2024 to 22.9% by 2050, highlighting the rapid pace of ageing and the significant changes in healthcare needs expected over the coming decades.

As the older population grows, care needs are gradually shifting from a focus on treating acute illnesses towards long-term health management, prevention and maintaining independent living. This is driving the development of long-term care, rehabilitation, home-based care and solutions that support older people, while placing new demands on healthcare systems to deliver more continuous and comprehensive care.

Alongside demographic change, technology is transforming how healthcare services are delivered and accessed. Digital transformation and artificial intelligence are being applied to support diagnosis, data management, remote health monitoring and operational efficiency. In parallel, personalised care solutions and assistive technologies are expanding the delivery of services beyond hospitals, moving towards a proactive, continuous and patient-centred model of care.

New Opportunities for Vietnam’s Healthcare Sector Amid Development and Transformation

As ASEAN’s healthcare sector enters a period of growth and transformation, Vietnam is becoming an increasingly notable market in the region. According to the World Bank, Vietnam’s GDP grew by 8% in 2025 and is forecast to grow by a further 6.8% in 2026, supported by exports, investment and the resilience of the domestic economy. This growth, together with urbanisation, rising incomes and changing healthcare needs, is laying the foundation for further expansion of the healthcare market.

The medical device market is one area that clearly demonstrates this potential. According to the Government News portal, Vietnam’s medical device market reached approximately US$2 billion in 2025 and continues to grow strongly. The Ministry of Health also places Vietnam among the nine largest medical device markets in the Asia-Pacific region. Rising demand for medical examinations and treatment, population ageing and improved living standards continue to drive demand for medical devices, diagnostic technologies and new healthcare solutions.

This development is helping Vietnam keep pace more quickly with regional healthcare trends, from technology adoption and digital transformation to stronger diagnostic, treatment and long-term care capacity. Policies promoting investment, pharmaceutical industry development and healthcare system modernisation are also creating further momentum for businesses to expand, introduce new technologies to the market and participate more deeply in healthcare value chains.

New Government Policies Are Supporting the Development of Vietnam’s Healthcare Sector

As 2026 begins, Vietnam’s healthcare sector continues to be supported by policies on proactive healthcare, preventive medicine and digital transformation.

Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo is providing further impetus for healthcare development, not only through its focus on proactive healthcare, preventive medicine and digital transformation, but also by directly promoting the development of the pharmaceutical and medical device industries and domestic manufacturing capacity. The Resolution calls for stronger research, technological innovation and technology transfer, and encourages private-sector investment in the production and supply of healthcare products and services, thereby expanding opportunities for both domestic and international businesses.

At the same time, Decision No. 1165/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on National Strategy for Vietnam’s Pharmaceutical Industry Development to 2030, with a vision to 2045, together with pharmaceutical industry development programmes, aims to enhance manufacturing capacity, strengthen supply self-reliance and increase technology adoption. In the medical device sector, continued institutional improvements and a more favourable environment for production and business are also helping promote investment, technological innovation and market expansion for pharmaceutical and medical device companies in Vietnam.

Ravex – The Vietnam In’t Exhibition On Rehabilitation Products, Assistive Devices For People With Disabilities

As part of Pharmedi Vietnam 2026, RAVEX continues to expand its exhibition offering with products, technologies and solutions in rehabilitation and proactive healthcare for people with disabilities.

RAVEX also addresses a range of care and rehabilitation needs, including physical therapy equipment, post-treatment rehabilitation, mobility aids, and solutions combining sports, healthcare and rehabilitation.

Eldercare Expo – Exhibition Of Products And Technology For Elderly Care & Support

Looking towards the future of elderly care, Eldercare Expo takes place alongside Pharmedi Vietnam 2026, expanding the exhibition space for products and solutions that address healthcare needs across the life course. WHO notes that population ageing is progressing rapidly in ASEAN, with Vietnam among the countries experiencing a particularly rapid pace of population ageing. As ageing becomes a major trend in Vietnam and the region, demand for products and solutions that support older people is expected to continue increasing. This creates opportunities to advance the development of elderly care products and services in Vietnam and ASEAN.

For older people, Eldercare Expo focuses on daily living and mobility aids, medical and rehabilitation equipment, smart-home solutions, nutrition products, and home- and community-based care services. These solutions support healthy ageing, help maintain mobility and independent living, and respond to growing demand for long-term care.

The exhibition also extends to middle-aged people and those who proactively manage their health, featuring products and solutions that support physical wellbeing, beauty, proactive healthcare and anti-ageing. In this way, Eldercare Expo addresses not only care needs in later life, but also the journey towards healthy ageing, creating further opportunities for businesses in healthcare, nutrition, beauty, technology and lifestyle.

The Vietnam–Australia Business Dialogue will comprise two discussion sessions, providing businesses from both countries with opportunities to exchange views and explore cooperation in healthcare. The programme will continue with business networking, the showcasing of Australian supplements and B2B meetings with potential customers, supporting engagement and the search for collaboration opportunities between Vietnam and Australia.

A conference on elderly healthcare will bring together Vietnamese and international experts to offer diverse perspectives on understanding older people’s feelings, needs and experiences at different stages of later life. It will also explore the potential of the silver economy and care models suited to an ageing population.
