Vietnam: People with Breast Cancer are getting Younger

About 5-7% of breast cancer patients in Vietnam are under 40 years old, while most women in European and American countries get this disease after menopause, that is, from 50 years old.

On October 25, M.D. Huynh Ba Tan, Department of Breast Surgery, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said the above information, adding that women in Asia are often diagnosed with breast cancer at a younger age. The average age of breast cancer patients in Southeast Asia is 27.2 years old, compared to 43.2 years old in developed countries in Europe and America.

"The age of breast cancer patients in Vietnam is getting younger and younger, but the reason for the youthful trend has not yet been determined," Dr. Tan said.

Breast cancer is the leading cancer in women. It is estimated that each year globally there are about 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer. In Vietnam, the Global Cancer Organization (Globocan) reported 21,555 new breast cancer cases, accounting for 25.8% of the total number of cancer patients, with 9,345 deaths.

According to Dr. Tan, Asian women in general and Vietnamese women in particular have denser breast tissue structures than Western women; Differences in breast tissue structure and genetic characteristics increase the risk of early breast cancer. Dense breast tissue is not an abnormal sign, but it is a risk factor for breast cancer. Women with dense breast tissue have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with a lot of fatty tissue.

There are many factors that increase the risk of breast cancer such as genetics (family history of breast cancer), gender (women have a higher risk than men), and age (over 50 years old). People with a sedentary lifestyle, drinking alcohol, unhealthy eating, obesity, early puberty, late menopause, not breastfeeding, etc. also belong to the risk group. Consuming a lot of fast food, processed foods, being sedentary, etc. also causes breast cancer to increase, especially in young women.

The development of modern medicine and people's awareness of periodic health examinations have increased. Therefore, many young people accidentally discover cancer during screening.

According to Dr. Tan, in Vietnam, the group of women under 40 years old is not included in the screening program. Most come for examination when there are clinical symptoms, so the proportion of patients in the late stage is higher.

Breast cancer can be well controlled and cured in its early stages. Breast cancer treatment in young people considers specific factors such as breast reconstruction, preservation of reproductive function, psychological counseling, etc.

Currently, breast cancer treatment combines disease control and aesthetics, helping women feel confident about their appearance and marital life. Depending on each case, the doctor will give specific advice and treatment plans.

Doctors recommend that women have regular breast exams and screening to detect breast cancer at an early stage. Women after age 40 need to have a mammogram every year. Even without family history and risk factors, young women should have regular check-ups. People with unusual tumors in the chest need to see a doctor to determine the type of tumor and advise on appropriate and timely treatment.
