Vietnam Strengthens Health Equity and Sustainability on Universal Health Coverage Day

Vietnam Strengthens Health Equity and Sustainability on Universal Health Coverage Day

On December 12, 2025, Vietnam marked Universal Health Coverage Day with significant advancements in its healthcare system. The World Health Organization (WHO) commended the country’s National Assembly for adopting three transformative measures aimed at improving disease prevention, equity, and sustainability. These initiatives align with Vietnam’s commitment to universal health coverage (UHC) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring access to quality healthcare for all citizens.

Key Legislative Measures Adopted

1. Law on Disease Prevention

Vietnam’s new Law on Disease Prevention shifts the focus from treatment to prevention, addressing critical health issues such as infectious diseases, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), mental health, and nutrition. This legislation empowers government agencies to proactively reduce the disease burden and promote healthier communities.

2. Population Law for Sustainable Development

Responding to demographic challenges like population aging, declining fertility rates, and gender imbalance, the Population Law aims to enhance the quality of life and support Vietnam’s socio-economic development. It provides a framework for addressing long-term population trends while fostering sustainable growth.

3. National Target Programme on Health Care, Population, and Development (2026–2035)

This comprehensive program strengthens grassroots healthcare, prioritizes disease prevention, and focuses on vulnerable populations. By promoting equitable access to health services, the program builds a resilient health system capable of addressing future challenges.

WHO’s Endorsement and Global Alignment

Dr. Angela Pratt, WHO Representative in Vietnam, praised the government’s commitment to improving the health of its 100 million citizens. She highlighted Vietnam’s achievements in expanding social health insurance coverage to 95% of the population and emphasized the importance of the new measures in advancing UHC principles.

“These initiatives align with national health strategies and global commitments under the SDGs,” said Dr. Pratt. “They reinforce Vietnam’s dedication to ensuring that all people have access to quality health services without financial hardship.”

Business Implications and Opportunities

Vietnam’s healthcare reforms present significant opportunities for businesses and investors:

  1. Healthcare Technology: The focus on disease prevention and grassroots healthcare opens avenues for digital health solutions, telemedicine platforms, and data analytics.
  2. Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment: The emphasis on addressing NCDs and infectious diseases creates demand for innovative treatments and advanced medical devices.
  3. Public-Private Partnerships: The National Target Programme encourages collaboration between government and private entities to enhance healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.

Conclusion

Vietnam’s adoption of these measures on Universal Health Coverage Day underscores its commitment to building a healthier, more equitable society. By prioritizing prevention, addressing demographic challenges, and strengthening grassroots healthcare, the country is paving the way for sustainable development and improved well-being for its citizens.

For businesses and stakeholders, Vietnam’s healthcare transformation offers a dynamic landscape for collaboration and investment, contributing to a resilient and prosperous future.
